Lean Manufacturing Specialist

Connstep, Inc., located in Rocky Hill, is Connecticut’s leading not-for-profit manufacturing resource center, dedicated to helping Connecticut manufacturers apply advanced manufacturing and management techniques to become more competitive, while supporting the growth of Connecticut's economy.

The Lean Manufacturing Specialist provides small and mid-sized manufacturers with Lean and Lean-related assistance and management approaches that will induce improvements in productivity and overall competitiveness. The Lean Manufacturing Specialist is responsible for promoting CONNSTEP’s services, developing and selling improvement projects – especially Lean-related projects – and managing and/or delivering business consulting and process improvement services to manufacturers in accordance with established guidelines. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Determine the needs of individual manufacturers through personal, on-site formal or informal assessments.
  2. Provide Lean-related consulting services to individual firms.  Provide active leadership to develop and enhance CONNSTEP’s Lean-related consulting products and services.
  3. Promote the transfer of manufacturing-process-related technologies and best management practices.
  4. Manage client projects, including the development of project proposals and all reports, payments, and billing.
  5. Induce clients to participate in educational programs, workshops, and seminars.
  6. Participate in CONNSTEP program planning, strategic planning, and other program and service development activities as required.
  7. Market and promote CONNSTEP programs and services at every opportunity.

Qualifications and Requirements:

The Lean Manufacturing Specialist must have a minimum of five years of successful experience implementing Lean manufacturing principles in a manufacturing organization, a manufacturing-related outreach program, technical sales or consulting with manufacturers.  Experience with small and larger firms in multiple industries is preferred.  Demonstrated success in improving performance in a manufacturing environment through the application of Lean principles is required.

A degree in business, engineering or other manufacturing-related field is preferred.

Core competency in Lean related tools and approaches is required as is familiarity with manufacturing management systems/practices.  Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential, and the ability to assist firms in identifying problems, developing solutions, and providing resources through the implementation stage is a key skill.

In addition, this position requires strong personal skills necessary to deal effectively with internal CONNSTEP staff (including work in a cooperative, mutually-supportive way with other field engineers), partners, and a diverse group from industry, business associations, educational institutions, civic organizations, and government, including the ability to make effective presentations to industry, civic, political and other groups. To be successful, one must be self-motivating, self-managing, and willing to take initiative and control with honesty and integrity,

This critical position is responsible for developing and implementing quality procedures and instructions, as well as analysis of quality records and problems. Reporting to our Engineering Manager, your main job duties will include:

  • Application of professional training and experience to develop process control plans, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA’s), Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (GR&R) studies, capability studies and other quality related tasks needed to comply with customer requirements.
  • Review and analysis of quality records, methods and plans to improve performance and reduce waste.
  • Development of measurement techniques based on part function and print requirement.
  • Assisting others with problem solving techniques.
  • Developing inspection methods and gauging designs for new products. 
  • Initiating customer contact on inspection issues.

To be successful, you’ll need a minimum of 3 years of related quality engineering experience in a progressive tool & die environment. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required. ISO9000/TS 16949, Lean and project management experience all a strong  plus. Medical device and/or automotive experience also preferred. Personally, you’ll need to be both self-motivated and team oriented with strong analytical skills and a track record of good judgment and decision making.

Job Requirements:
